What was done here is simply subdivide 2 surfaces and list points to get sets of strips and "cull" it! Usually when you make hexagrids, it's a bunch of hexagons set on a point grid and a center point...
And when you get to production, you unroll hexagon cells one by one...and start getting it together and it lasts forever! Moreover, you need much more material (cardboard or whatever you are using and glue)!
